Summer Book Haul

I've done pretty well with the whole 'one new book for every two read' deal I made with myself at the beginning of this year. In fact, the books in this post were the first books I've acquired for a couple of months now. They've all been on my to-buy list for a really long time, but now I have them! Now I just have to find somewhere to put them...

Magisterium: The Iron Trial by Holly Black & Cassandra Clare*. The first instalment of a new series, this book sees our main character Call (short for Callum) as he tries his best not to enter the Magisterium (he fails), which is a training school for young magicians. I'm nearly half-way through this book, and I really like it! The Magisterium is such a beautiful, interesting setting and I like the fact that Call is a total anti-hero.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. I read the first few chapters of this back in March (read my first impressions here) and finally got around to picking it up when I found it in Asda for £4. It's a dystopian, but there's supernatural elements as some of the characters (the Silvers) have magical/superior powers. I'm not 100% certain what the main storyline of this book is, but I'm looking forward to finding out!

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. This book. I actually cried when I finished it, which was at about 2.30am, a couple of hours after I started it. It's about two high school students (Eleanor and Park, obvs) who slowly begin to fall in love. The book is split between both of their points of view, which was such a lovely and interesting aspect as we were able to hear both of their thoughts during certain situations. I love both of the characters equally, and they have quickly become some of my favourites EVER.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. I've written a full review of this book here so I wont go into too much detail now. It's a loose fairy-tale retelling of Beauty & The Beast, and is kind of dystopian/fantasy. The main character is Feyre, a riches-to-rags hunter that is one day wandering the woods, searching for something to feed her family. She comes across a wolf, which she suspects is a Fae, and shoots it with an arrow. After this significant action, Feyre must face the consequences.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth. Fiiiinally I've gotten around to getting this! It's the third and final instalment of the Divergent trilogy. I was waiting for it to appear in a supermarket as they stock the covers that I like #booknerdproblems. I've heard VERY mixed reviews on this book, but I've read a few pages and it's not too bad so far. I'm in two minds about the split POV between Tris and Four as Four's POV isn't quite what I expected, but we shall see!

What do you think of the books I've picked up? Are there anymore I should add to my to-buy list?

  2. Oh I love Eleanor & Park! I just love Rainbow Rowell to be fair. I liked Allegiant and I honestly didn't mind the ending, but I felt like the series did get worse as it went on. And I've been meaning to pick up Red Queen and A Court of Thorns and Roses for ages!
