What's On My Bookshelf #1

As a nod to the classic 'What's In My Bag' post that is always making the rounds in the fashion and beauty blogging community, I thought I'd do a little 'What's On My Bookshelf' post. This shelf is part of my tiny Ikea Alex unit that I keep next to my bed and is where I keep all of my current TBR books, along with five of my favourites for a re-read. The books on this shelf rotate regularly, depending on what I am reading/want to read next.

Currently Reading:

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare. I'm currently about half-way through this book and have been really enjoying it. I posted my 'First Impressions' on this books first 100 or so pages here if you want to hear my thoughts so far!

Insurgent by Veronica Roth. I finished Divergent a few weeks ago and had been putting off getting the sequel because, to be honest, I wasn't too fussed whether I read it or not. My thoughts of Divergent weren't too great, but after spotting this in Asda yesterday I picked it up. And am nearly half-way through. All of the things I disliked about Divergent (the writing, dialogue and choppy scenes) have been completely erased in this book, only to replaced with much better versions. Really enjoying this so far.

A Game Of Thrones by George RR Martin. I bought my boyfriend the season one box set of Game Of Thrones for his birthday in May, but naturally I couldn't watch it before reading the book first. However - and this may offend some GoT fans - I literally only read the Daenerys (who is the best female character ever) sections of the book. I don't care much for the Starks and so find it hard to really get into their parts, so I've kind of been skipping a lot. Guilty as charged.

To Be Read:

Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I've read the first few pages of this, but have cast is aside to read the books above instead. I bought this after reading a million amazing reviews about it, so am looking forward to see if it lives up to it's reputation! It's a sci-fi novel, which is something I've never read before, so I'm trying to approach it with an open mind. The quality of the writing so far though has been beautiful, so I'm looking forward to reading this next.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner. The idea of this book is very intriguing and very dystopian, which is something I love in a read. The reviews I've read haven't been great, but I'm hoping that I'll find it a lot better than other people have. It's been recommended for people who like The Hunger Games - which is my favourite book ever - although I'm not sure why because the plots don't seem similar at all. However, it's a nice short read so hopefully I'll be able to power through it quickly.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. This book isn't really a TBR currently, as I'm waiting for the last film to come out before I read it, simply so my boyfriend and I can experience the ending together without me whispering things in the middle of the cinema like I usually do. Middle Earth is one of my favourite fictional worlds and I'm really looking forward to reading Bilbo's journey.

The Fellowship Of The Ring by JRR Tolkien. I'm actually about 100 pages into this, but like Cinder, I'm prioritising the other books first. This book is so cute and there are so many beautiful details that were never featured in the films. It's a bit long, though, because of these details so I do find it quite tedious at times.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban. I always have a Harry Potter book on the go, it's kind of a tradition for me. Currently, I'm reading the Chamber of Secrets (which isn't on the shelf as it's down my boyfriend's house) so this is the next logical one to read.

Favourites.

Wonder by RJ Palacio. Such an adorable, uplifting little read. It's about a boy named Augustus who has a severe facial disfigurement and his journey during his first year of middle school. It's such a sweet book and very inspirational, although a few POV's are kind of unnecessary and a tad boring.

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. Naturally, this book has earned itself a spot on my favourites list. Cute and devastating, this is a must read. Hazel and Augustus are cancer patients, who slowly and realistically fall into the most adorable, quirky romance. Be warned: the ending is heart breaking.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This book is the only book that has actually made me cry. As in full-on, unattractive sobbing. Written in the form of letters sent to a stranger from Charlie, we follow him during his first year of high school. Packed with beautiful quotes that anyone in any walk of life could pull meaning from, this book owns my heart.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This book was my first taste of Dystopian novels and certainly opened up my eyes to a lot of issues in society. I know some people say that it's really unrealistic, but I find it really believable. I've read this book more times than I can count and I still find it amazing every single time.

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. My love of this book comes with my fascination of Geisha and Japan in general. A beautifully written book about the devastating and difficult life of a Geisha in the time period of World War Two.

So that's what's currently on my bookshelf!

    2. I work in a library, so I have to keep my borrowed books separate to my own books. And then there's a cupboard for the ex-library books bought in sales!xx
